Herts & Essex Companies Collaborate to Create
The Ultimate Courtyard Kitchen Garden at the Chelsea Flower Show 2009

Hatfield Heath based Pat Fox from Aralia Garden Design has been working with a team of local business folk from across Hertfordshire and Essex to ensure her modern kitchen garden will deliver a visual wow factor and inspiration for even owners of small outdoor spaces to embrace the concept of growing, preparing and eating food outdoors.

Small courtyard gardens have been a regular feature for a several years at the Chelsea Flower Show but never before has there been a courtyard kitchen garden complete with living wall. Pat’s Chelsea Flower Show garden will be planted up with only edible plants, absolutely every plant can be eaten. The concept involves seeing the garden as an extension of the kitchen – somewhere to whip up a cocktail, a salad, a sandwich or a smoothie using the freshest ingredients picked directly from the garden.

In order to create the garden Pat sought sponsorship and found it at her local chapter of the BNI (Business Network International). Her show sponsors are Pawley & Malyon Chartered Accountants who have a long established accountancy practice with offices in London & Bishops Stortford. Heather Barnes Overseas Property Investment & Sales who are based near Saffron Walden and Attwaters Solicitors who have offices based in Loughton & Harlow.

Other local collaborators include Armstrong Jordan Ltd from Matching Green who specialise in handmade, bespoke kitchens and cabinetry of the very highest quality and for Pat’s Chelsea Flower Show garden they have made some spectacular outdoor kitchen cabinets with a worktop surface made from semi precious angel Jasper supplied by Cosentino and fitted by Russel Stone Work Surfaces of White Roding. The hardwood, Massaranduba, is being supplied by Andrew Banks of High Wych, for the flooring, cabinets and impressive 1.8m long chopping board

It’s not possible to put on a show garden without a first rate landscaper and Pat’s landscaper of choice is Terrafirma who work out of Leaden Roding and who have been working closely with Aralia Garden Design for over 3 years and have completed many successful projects together.

Eco-lutions are a highly progressive, innovative company based in Saffron Walden specialising in the design & creation of lighting and electrical systems, with an emphasis on energy preservation. All of the exciting lighting on the garden has been designed by Neil Gaffan from Eco-lutions, who are also installing the first ever mirror effect integrated LCD TV in this outdoor Chelsea kitchen.
The garden will boast an impressive Chelsea Flower Show first and possibly even a first at any major world flower show – a living wall planted with edible crops – grown hydroponically – using mineral nutrient solutions, in rock wool rather than soil. Raised beds will contain salad and fruit crops such as lemons, strawberries, baby leaves and runner beans. Although the garden will essentially be green, accents of colour will be introduced via lime green and purple foliage and flowering crops such as nasturtiums and lavender.
