The Chelsea Flower Show has been showcasing all that’s new in horticulture and the best of the traditional for almost a century. This year one of the courtyard gardens designed by Pat Fox from Aralia Garden Design will display not only horticultural innovation with a living wall but also the ultimate in eco friendly lighting, sound and entertainment systems designed by Neil Gaffan of Saffron Waldon based Eco-Lutions.
The garden will boast an impressive Chelsea Flower Show first and possibly even a first at any major world flower show – a living wall planted with edible crops. All plants for the wall have been grown hydroponically – using mineral nutrient solutions, in rock wool rather than soil. Green walling is relatively under-developed in the UK and Pat hopes that her garden can demonstrate to the public the advantages – the principle one being a reduction of thermal loading on the building fabric, heat island reduction, storm-water attenuation, noise reduction, urban ecology, air purification and psychological well being of urban dwellers and with Pat’s garden the exciting opportunity to produce food.
Neil has worked with Pat to enhance the design of the garden with subtle use of the very latest in low energy usage lighting for the entire garden, ensuring that this outdoor space will not impact negatively on the environment and without using enormous amounts of electrical energy it will be both functional and striking at night. The use of LED lights and innovative effects will give this garden a magical impact, from glowing precious stone work tops to ‘texture lit’ vertical herb walls, this garden will be a work of art, as well as a fully functional garden kitchen.
Eco-lutions Technical Director, Neill Gaffan is an electrical engineer with 14 years experience across the entire electrical spectrum, from Industrial control and automation through to audio visual systems. He has completed projects in the UK, Russia, China, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark, Germany, Austria, Ireland and Greece. He said of his collaboration with Aralia Garden Design, “We have been very fortunate to be asked to contribute our technologies and expertise to Patricia Fox’s Chelsea flower show garden. This is a very exiting opportunity and will allow us to enhance what will already be a fabulous garden, but also showcase some of our products and design flair”

Added value and energy efficient solutions are critical to every Eco-lutions design project and as such the entire lighting power consumption in the garden will be less than a standard 100w domestic light bulb!
Everything in the garden is bespoke, from the beautiful hand made kitchen cabinets made from Massaranduba hard wood (FSC approved) to the growing boxes which are integral to the kitchen cabinets have been waterproofed using the very latest green roof technology. They are painted with a waterproof liner, to fully seal the units, several layers of various materials are then introduced to allow water to be stored for later use by the plants and any excess water is drained away by a mini drainage system. A contemporary overhead pergola will incorporate galvanized steel uprights and curved overheads to support edible crops.
Raised beds will contain salad and fruit crops such as lemons, strawberries, baby leaves and runner beans. Although the garden will essentially be green, accents of colour will be introduced via lime green and purple foliage and flowering crops such as nasturtiums and lavender.
