The clients have lived in their detached London home for several years, and having completed renovations to the interior, they wanted to update the terrace area of their London garden to bring it in line with the quality and standard of the interior. Aralia designed a contemporary garden terrace that would enhance this interior, evoking a modern garden style with geometric lines and clean palettes.
The existing terrace had a pond in the middle which separated the terrace into two sections. Aralia removed this pond and replaced it with a contemporary water feature, this change created a more usable garden terrace space. Aralia designed two ‘outdoor rooms’ which would work as outdoor living spaces, with each having an independent function. The first area was created with a focus on evening & entertaining use, with sunken seating for 8 people. This area was designed as a sunken outdoor lounge, with lowwide walls which provide informal garden seating for when entertaining larger numbers. By sinking this outdoor lounge area, the space immediately feels more intimate and private. The second garden room is designed as a contemporary dinning space which can host up to 12 people, as well as for day to day family meals.
Aralia took reference from the materials used in the interior of the house, using sawn natural stone and resin bound gravel as the main materials in this urban garden. Aralia contrasted this with alternative materials such as clay pavers, hardwood decking and gorgeous planting, which also would soften the edges and corners of this urban garden.
Aralia were working as Landscape Architects working within a multi-disciplinary consultant team and a range of sub-contractors. Aralia were responsible for concept creation through to design detail.
